Excessive Sweating

Excessive Sweating Treatment, Hyperhidrosis Treatment
& Botox for Sweating in Cambridge
Our body’s naturally sweat in response to changes in our environment, physical activity and our emotions. When sweating occurs at inappropriate times or is excessive this is called Hyperhidrosis. Affecting both men and women at all ages it can leave affected areas constantly damp, making everyday activities difficult to carry out, causing great discomfort, distress and embarrassment to the sufferer. Many needing to change clothing throughout the day and throw again ruined stained clothes.
We treat excessive sweating by injecting small quantities of Botulium toxin A, commonly known as Botox® into the affected areas which causes the muscle to become weakened or inactivated. This blocks the action of the nerves that supply the sweat glands and stops them producing sweat.
Results last approximately 6 months on average.
Common areas for treatment include:
- Armpits

What causes underarm sweating?
When excessive sweating, more commonly known in the medical term as Hyperhidrosis, occurs in the underarm area it is called as axillary hyperhidrosis and is caused by stimulation of the eccine sweat glands by the nerve endings which are the final nerve pathways from higher centres in the brain. These nerves respond to different kinds of stress such as emotional stress like public speaking or intimate social situations. Or physical stress such as increased body temperatures from exercise or hot and humid climates.
Some people are routinely troubled by excessive sweating whilst others are only bothered when they are under emotional stress, physically active or over-heated. The nerves that control sweating depend upon a chemical transmitter called acetylcholine which is a molecule produced at the very ends of the nerve fibres. Botulinum Toxin is a genetically engineered neurotoxin which can, when injected into the skin, block the release of the acetylcholine to the sweat glands for months!
Who is suitable for Hyperhidrosis?
Both men and women can be troubled by excessive underarm sweating which can have embarrassing affects in their life.
How is Botox® used?
Our specialist doctor will carry out a painless and harmless starch and iodine test to locate the sweat glands. For comfort a topical cream is used to numb the areas and small amounts of Botox® is injected into the skin of the underarms using a very small needle, in several positions on each underarm. Heavy physical exercise should be avoided for several hours, but patients may continue with their normal activity.
When will treatment take effect?
Your underarm sweating is expected to decrease to 95% within 48 hours and the full effect to be seen within 2 weeks. Along with the sweating, there is a simultaneous disappearance of odour associated with the decreased sweating.
How long does the treatment last?
On average majority of our patients will obtain 6 to 8 months of dryness with one treatment.
What are the risks and complications?
The only complications from injection into the axillary skin are some tiny bruises that are rare but occasionally seen. These fade in a few days and occasionally small persistent areas of sweating that may need a second treatment session. There is no risk of muscle weakness, numbness or permanent change in the axillary skin.
